What is EEG?

An Electroencephalogram (EEG) is a test that is used to evaluate electrical activity within the brain. It can be used to detect problems with brain cell communication through electrical impulses. The test does this by tracking and recording brainwave patterns by attaching electrodes with wires to the patient’s scalp. The test evaluates the electrical impulses in the brain and sends signals to a computer to record the results. The results then help physicians discover any unusual patterns in order to ascertain the right treatment plan.

What is a Routine EEG?

A routine EEG is a test that lasts approximately 20-40 minutes where patients rest quietly and are asked to open and close their eyes periodically as well as breathe in and out deeply for a few minutes. A flashing light may also be added to the test to see if it has any effect on brain activity. Typically, no video is included in this type of EEG test.

What Does It Diagnose Best?

EEG is often performed to detect problems with the electrical activity of the brain. It is commonly used to identify and investigate epilepsy to help patients see what kind of epilepsy they may suffer from or what may be causing it.
